Allergies and Menopause

As we enter PeriMenopause and Menopause, we are more likely to start experiencing an increase in sensitivity to allergies that we previously only had slight effects from, or new allergies might spring up seemingly out of nowhere.

A study showed that women in PeriMenopause that had not had a period for 6 months, experienced an 80% increase in asthma related respiratory conditions, compared to women that were still menstruating.

These increases in allergies and intolerances can have a detrimental impact on our busy working lives, with 51% of women having reported that they take time away from their business or career due to PeriMenopausal and Menopausal symptoms.

MY STORY

I found that my allergies of hay fever, dry skin and a reaction to dairy were getting increasingly worse.

I struggled with these and was not alone, from talking to other midlife women they were experiencing the same issues.

You might find yourself intolerant to something you’ve always eaten without problems previously. Or may even develop allergies such asthma or hay fever that you never had before!

WHAT CAUSES MENOPAUSE ALLERGIES AND INTOLERANCES

While we may never have had a problem with certain things before, we may notice allergies or intolerances during or after our menopause. This is because our female hormones are linked to our immune system.

The impact of our hormone fluctuations will stress our immune system, and the histamine reaction basically goes wild. It starts to over work and can start to work when it isn’t needed.

Our hormone fluctuations cause other menopause symptoms, which impact our immune system which can make our allergies and intolerances worse.

We know that falling oestrogen and all the hormonal changes that are going on can make us very, very fatigued, and fatigue will have an effect on our immune system.

We know also, that the menopause can affect our digestion. It can affect our absorption, so we may not be getting all the nutrients that we need in order to support our immune system. This also stresses our liver, and the liver can play a huge part in actually deactivating histamine.

HOW TO MANAGE ALLERGIES AND INTOLERANCES
